ABOUT MANDURAH

While Mandurah and the Peel Region were settled by Englishman Thomas Peel in 1830, the first people known to have inhabited the Mandurah area were Aboriginal people of the Bibbulmun Nation. The Estuary was a main source of food for them and they had a superior knowledge of living off the land, which abounded in fish, game, berries and fruits. The locality was then known as Mandjar, which translates to 'meeting place'.

After European settlement, the name was adapted to its current title of Mandurah however we still proudly remember our heritage with part of our main waterway along the city foreshore called Mandjar Bay. Along the eastern foreshore is the heritage art walk - a series of statues and mosaics that depict people, events and activities from Mandurah’s Aboriginal and Settler history. Visitors to Mandurah can enjoy a pleasant stroll by the river as they follow unique markers that share the story behind each of the artworks dedicated to the Binjareb Bilyidar people of the Bibbulmun Nation who used to inhabit the Mandurah region as well as the artworks relating to the first European settlers to the Mandurah area.

Allowing visitors a fantastic opportunity to explore Mandurah’s richly diverse past, the trail begins at the Mandurah Community Museum next to the old bridge. Beautifully preserved heritage buildings are dotted around Mandurah City and provide an accurate portrayal of life as it once was in Mandurah. The iconic Hall’s Cottage was originally built in 1832 and has been carefully restored to honour the early settlers of Mandurah & Western Australia. Refurbished limestone cottages can be seen along Mandurah Terrace and add character to the new and modern buildings of the City. The Mandurah Community Museum’s history walk, taking in building such as the Eureka Cottage - built 1862 - is a fantastic way to take in these historical Mandurah sites and learn more about their origin.

With so much to see and do in the Mandurah region, your time in Mandurah will be well spent. Perhaps you have a fancy to take a cruise and capture a glimpse of some of the many bottlenose dolphins that live in the Mandurah waterways. Or how about catching a feed of succulent blue swimmer crabs in Mandurah, or wetting a line for some exciting river, estuary or ocean fishing in Mandurah.

There's also house-boating and cruising quiet rivers and waterways in Mandurah. Dining, theatre-going and art exhibitions on Mandurahs spectacular waterfront. Or step back in time as you visit some of the Peels' heritage sites. You can do all this and more right here in Mandurah.

Perhaps you'd prefer to sip an award-winning vintage at a character winery near Mandurah. Tee off on a world famous golf course near Mandurah.  Browse in discount, clearance, boutique and specialty shops.  Trek a section of the famous Bibbulmun Track or cycle a leg of the new Munda Biddi Cycle Trail.  Try your hand at white water rafting in Mandurah. Visit a feature garden. Or just relax as you enjoy the Peel Regions extensive smorgasbord of natural delights - a network of inland waterways, rivers, wetlands, lakes, forests, National Parks and sandy ocean beaches. The Mandurah area is a great place to get back to nature.

Less than sixty minutes drive south from Perth, the Peel Region covers an area of 5,500 square kilometers and includes five sub-regions: Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Murray (including Pinjarra and Dwellingup), Boddington, Waroona and Mandurah.
